    Forensic science is the application of knowledge to answer criminal law decisions involving science. The interest in forensic science has grown significantly in recent years due to increased media coverage and popular TV programmes. Forensic Science courses will help you gain a thorough understanding of relevant aspects of crime scene examination, human anatomy and physiology. You will also develop a range of skills associated with retrieving and interpreting information from a variety of sources. 


    This BTEC course is designed to give you the knowledge, understanding and technical skills to prepare you for employment in a Forensic Science laboratory or to continue your study in higher education.

    Subsidiary Diploma: Equivalent in size to one A Level with. 4 units of which 3 are mandatory and 2 are external. This qualification will allow the learner to retake GCSE English alongside the main programme.

    90 Credit Diploma: Equivalent in size to 1.5 A Levels. 6 units of which 4 are mandatory and 2 are external.

    Where will I be studying?

    The Brooklands College Forensic Science department are delighted to have received a certificate of endorsement from the Chartered Society of Forensic Science

    The society who represents forensic sciences world-wide is the body who sets high professional standards for this field of work.  During their visit  they were particularly impressed with a number of things relating to the college’s Forensics course including:

    1. The range of forensic topics delivered to the students 
    2. The opportunity to visit various courts of law (such as Magistrates, Crown and Old Bailey) was excellent for the students and the availability of the legal personnel within the court e.g. the judge taking time to discuss with the students was commendable.
    3. The College makes good use of its extensive grounds for outdoor crime scene work. There was a good range of facilities including indoor scenes with CCTV, vehicles and a mock courtroom.
    4. Staff at the college are actively involved in the development of the future BTEC awards.

    What modules are covered?

    Students follow a range of units including:

    • Applied science
    • Criminology
    • Criminal psychology
    • Criminal investigation

    The units have been picked to provided student with a broad learning experience that will provide flexibility in career choice.

    How is the course assessed?

    You will be assessed using a mixture of coursework and examination.

    What qualifications will I need?

    Level 3 Entry Requirements

    5 GCSE passes at grade C/grade 4 or above,  including English, Maths and Science (some subject areas may require higher grades than grade C/4 in a specific subject), or for progressing students successful achievement of a level 2 vocational qualification.

    Next Steps

    After the successful completion of year 1, student may have the option to transfer onto another year to complete either the: 

    National Diploma in Forensics Equivalent in size to two A Levels. 8 units of which 6 are mandatory and 3 are external.
    Or
    National Extended Diploma in Forensics Equivalent in size to three A Levels. 13 units of which 7 are mandatory and 4 are external.
