    The BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport and Exercise Science will give learners an in-depth understanding of the Sport and Active Leisure sector, whilst also developing the essential skills required for employment, career progression, or progression to further qualifications and training. Throughout the course, additional activities and courses may be undertaken. These could include the YMCA Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing and First Aid.  You will also benefit from a period of 2 weeks work experience.

    During the course you will cover 18 units:

    Example core units include:

    • Research Methods for Sport and Exercise Science
    • Research Project for Sport and Exercise Science
    • Applied Sport and Exercise Psychology
    • Applied Sport and Exercise Physiology
    • Sports Injuries

    Plus units from a range of areas including:

    • Instructing Physical Activity
    • Outdoor Adventurous Activities
    • Fitness Training Programming
    • Sports Development

    Who is the course suitable for?

    This course is suitable for anyone with an interest in sport and who wants to gain a qualification to go into employment within the Sport, Health & Fitness industry, Sports Rehab, Nutrition and Sport Science or onto a Sport related Higher Education Course/Degree.  Students must be willing and able to participate in physical activity, as this is a requirement to achieve certain components of the course. The course is a combination of theory and practical units.

    How is the course assessed?

    Modules are assessed individually through coursework and assignments set, these are marked by both internal and external moderators.

    Are there any extra costs?

    There is an initial contribution to be paid at the start of the course for materials and equipment.  You would also be expected to make a contribution to take part in any opportunities that arose throughout the course such as trips and additional qualifications (e.g. coaching badges). More details on costs will be provided during the application stages.

    Entry Requirements

    What qualifications will I need?

    5 GCSE passes at grade C/grade 4 or above, ideally including English and Maths (some subject areas may require higher grades than grade C/4 in a specific subject), or for progressing students successful achievement of a level 2 vocational qualification.


    Next Steps

    This qualification will provide entry to a related Degree or Higher National Diploma. Students have progressed to degrees in areas such as Sports Science, Physical Education Teacher Training, and Sports Rehabilitation. It is also good preparation for anyone who wants to move straight into the Sports, Leisure or Health & Fitness industries.
