    The BTEC National is a vocational course which covers general and specialised aspects of IT.

    On the Extended Diploma, students will study 18 units over two years and achieve a qualification equivalent to 3 A Levels.

    On the Subsidiary, students will study 6 units in their first year. If suitable they may then progress onto the second year to study a further 6 units to achieve the National Diploma equivalent to 2 A levels. 

    Students take several core units and then, dependent on intake, may follow one of the specialised routes in Business or Software Development.

    Course Details

    What modules are covered?

    Business
    Here students will look at the impact IT has had on the Business world and how it can be used in the future. Units include e-Commerce, Website Production and Management and Organisational Systems Security.

    Systems Development
    Here students learn how to maintain a computer system. Units include Computer Systems, Software Development including Computer Games Development where students learn how to design and produce computer programs. Units include Principles of Software Design and Development, Event Driven Programming and Computer Games Design. Students on the Subsidiary Diploma will also have the opportunity to retake GCSEs in English & Maths, if appropriate. Students will be expected to go on work experience for 2 weeks during the year.

    Who is the course suitable for?

    If you are interested in computers and what they do; if you want a career working with computers or if you want to study the subject at university then this is the course for you.

    How is the course assesed?

    You will be assessed throughout the course on a mixture of internally and externally set assignments.

    Are there any extra costs?

    There are two set textbooks available for this course that will be ordered through the department. There will also be educational visits which are an essential part of the course, costs will be advised by your tutor. Students are allocated a certain amount of free printing, after which a small fee will be incurred.

    Entry Requirements

    What qualifications will I need?

    5 GCSE passes at grade 4 and above, ideally including English and Maths, or for progressing students, successful achievement of a level 2 vocational qualification at Merit grade.

    Next Steps

    Most students would be expected to move onto a Degree or other Higher Education Programmes. Alternatively you may choose to move into IT Apprenticeships or employment in the computing industry.
