  • About this course

    The aim of the course is to develop an understanding of the human body and how it is affected by physical activity, the health and safety factors involved in sports participation, the key principles involved in the coaching process, the fitness requirements and training methods needed for different sports as well as how to create fitness training programmes.

    Throughout the course additional activities and courses may be undertaken. You will also benefit from a period of 2 weeks work experience.

    What modules are covered?

    During the course you will study 6 units from a range of areas, example units are shown below:

    3 Core units:
    •  Principles of Anatomy and Physiology in Sport
    •  The Physiology of Fitness
    •  Fitness Testing for Sport and Exercise

    Other subjects
    •  Work Experience in Sport 
    •  Assessing Risk in Sport
    •  Sports Coaching 
    •  Practical Team Sports

    Who is the course suitable for?

    This course is suitable for anyone with an interest in sport and who wants to gain a Sport related qualification to aid their progression to employment or further study in a related subject.  Possible careers or further study could include the following areas but is not limited to: Health & Fitness industry, Sports Science,  Nutrition, Sports Rehabilitation, Sports Development, Coaching and the Outdoor Activity Industry. Students must be willing and able to participate in physical activity, as this is a requirement to achieve certain components of the course.  The course is a combination of theory and practical units.

    How is the course assessed?

    Modules are assessed individually through coursework and assignments set, these are marked by both internal and external moderators.

    Are there any extra costs?

    There is an initial contribution to be paid at the start of the course for materials and equipment.  You would also be expected to make a contribution to take part in any opportunities that arose throughout the course such as trips, additional qualifications, (e.g. coaching badges). More details on costs will be provided during the application stages.

    Students are allocated a certain amount of free printing, after which a small fee will be incurred.

    Entry Requirements

    What qualifications will I need?

    5 GCSE passes at grade C/grade 4 or above, ideally including English and Maths (some subject areas may require higher grades than grade C/4 in a specific subject), or for progressing students sucessful achievement of a level 2 vocational qualification.


    Next Steps

    This qualification will provide initial points that contribute to the entry to a related Degree or Higher National Diploma. Students have progressed to degrees in areas such as Sports Science, Physical Education Teacher Training, and Sports Rehabilitation. It is also good preparation for anyone who wants to move straight into the Sports, Leisure or Health & Fitness industries.
