    Apprenticeships are a popular choice for people aged 16 or above, looking for on the job training and the opportunity to gain nationally recognised qualifications whilst earning.

    Most of your training will be directly linked to the career you have chosen, gaining practical experience in the workplace.

    An apprenticeship in catering will give you the opportunity to gain the practical experience needed, as well as the theory behind the dishes you create.

    Job Role

    Hotels, pubs, contract catering and restaurants are all part of the catering industry. Whichever catering business you are working in, you could be involved with food production and cooking, food preparation and serving meals. Your exact duties will depend on your employer.

    Course Details

    What will the course involve?

    To gain the full apprenticeship you will work towards the following qualifications:

    • Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Food Production and Cooking (QCF)
    • Level 2 Certificate in Hospitality and Catering Principles (Food Production and Cooking) - QCF
    • Employment Rights and Responsibilities (ERR)
    • Functional Skills Level 1 in Maths and English
    • Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS)

    Mandatory units include:

    • Safe, hygienic and secure working environments in hospitality
    • Work effectively as part of a team
    • Food safety when storing, preparing and cooking food

    Optional units can include:

    • Produce basic fish, meat, poultry and vegetable dishes
    • Cook-freeze and cook-chill food
    • Produce hot and cold desserts
    • Principles of producing flour, dough and tray baked products

    Entry Requirements

    What qualifications will I need?

    If you do not have grade C or above in GCSE English and Maths, you must attend a Functional Skills course in English and Maths, Level 1.

    You will need to be an excellent time keeper, willing to work shifts, have a high standard of personal hygiene and a positive ‘can do’ attitude. All applicants applying for an apprenticeship will need to attend an interview and undertake initial assessments.


    How will I be assessed?

    You will attend day release at college one day a week over two academic years. You will be assessed in the workplace by an assessor through a portfolio of evidence. During your assessments targets will be set to ensure that you complete your apprenticeship on time.

    If you have achieved Grade C or above in Maths and English (or Grade 4 or above on the new grading scheme), you will not be required to undertake Functional Skills.

    If you have achieved less than these grades, you will be required to achieve a minimum Level 1 Functional Skills prior to or during the apprenticeship. These will be assessed through external examinations and workshops

    Job roles that this apprenticeship could lead to include: a chef with an approximate salary of £25,000; a kitchen assistant with an approximate salary of £11,700 or a commis chef.
