    You will be working with light motor vehicles (cars) and have access to removing, repairing, replacing and testing components. This will give you on the job experience in working in a mechanical workshop.

    Entry Requirements

    What qualifications will I need?

    You will need to demonstrate an interest in working in the engineering sector.

    A minimum standard in Maths and English is required. Typically candidates will have achieved or be expected to achieve minimum grades D and E in Maths, English and one science. All applicants applying for an apprenticeship will be required to attend an interview and undertake initial assessments.


    How will I be assessed?

    You will come to college for one day per week over two academic years, to achieve the Diploma in Motor Vehicle Maintenance and Repair.

    You will be compile a portfolio of evidence within the workplace, which will be reviewed and assessed by an assessor through regular workplace visits, in order to achieve the NVQ in Engineering.

    If you have achieved Grade C or above in Maths, English and ICT (or Grade 4 or above on the new grading scheme), you will not be required to undertake Functional Skills. If you have achieved less than these grades, you will be required to achieve a minimum Level 1 Functional Skills prior to or during the apprenticeship. These will be assessed through external examinations and workshops.


    Next Steps

    On successful completion of this apprenticeship the main occupations include metal working machine operatives, assemblers, fabricator and welders, inspectors and testers, and plant and machine operatives.

    You may be eligible to progress onto the Level 3 Apprenticeship in Engineering to further enhance your skills and knowledge in this sector. Alternatively you may wish to undertake the Level 3 NVQ in Engineering relevant to your specialism.

    Typical salary on completion of an engineering apprenticeship is £15,000 to £20,000.
