Course overview

This comprehensive apprenticeship is designed to equip aspiring hairdressers with the essential practical skills, technical knowledge, and professional client-care abilities needed to succeed in a modern salon environment. Learners will gain hands-on experience in fundamental hair services while developing the professional behaviors required to maintain a seamless, welcoming and efficient salon operation.

  • Ages 16–18: Applicants without a Grade 4 in English and maths will be required to study Functional Skills during the program.
  • Ages 19+: Adults are exempt from studying Functional Skills, subject to employer agreement.

What you'll learn

  • Style and finish hair
  • Cut hair using basic techniques
  • Colour and lighten hair
  • Advise and consult with clients
  • Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp
  • Develop and maintain your effectiveness at work
  • Maintain the salon’s cleanliness and welcoming environment
  • Greet clients, answer phone calls and manage appointments

You will be continually assessed throughout your training by a nominated Assessor. Most of the assessment will take place in the workplace to complete a portfolio of evidence, you will also take external and internal examinations for your functional skills (if required). Your progress will be reviewed regularly and achievable targets set, to ensure you complete your apprenticeship on time.


What you'll need

Your college training takes place in our professional, client-facing training salons, located in Ashford and Weybridge. You will have the opportunity to work with the general public and provide treatments to real clients, therefore purchasing the salon’s uniform is required. Upon enrolment, you will be advised on how and where to purchase this to start your course.

Students are also allocated a certain amount of free printing, after which a small fee will be incurred. You can purchase more printing credits on our online store, which can be found here.


Career Pathways

Upon successful completion of your apprenticeship, you may be interested in continuing your education at university or you may wish to progress onto a level 3 qualification. Many apprentices will also continue their education and employment through their apprenticeship employer.
