Course overview
This course is ideal for students who would like to work with children between the ages of 0-7 years old. This course will provide the fundamental knowledge and experience required to progress onto the level 3 T level in Education and childcare, focusing on the health, safety and wellbeing of young children in early years settings.
You will also take part in a work placement throughout the duration of your course which will build your experience and refine your skills. Qualifications in early years education can lead to exciting roles as a playworker, teaching assistant, pre-school worker, nanny, teaching assistant and much more.
Your study programme will consist of:
- Your chosen technical qualification
- GCSE English and maths if you are yet to achieve a grade 4 or above
- Personal Development sessions which focus on developing work-ready skills (such as CV writing), independent life skills (such as money management) and personal, social and professional growth.
- Work experience or industry placement (course dependent)

The minimum entry requirements for this course includes GCSE English and maths (grade 3-4) or Level 2 Functional Skills. Those who do not achieve a grade 4 in English or maths will be required to study this alongside their course.
What you'll learn
- Understand your role as an early years practitioner and learn how to communicate with babies, toddlers and young children
- Develop your knowledge of health and safety practises when working with children aged 0-5 years old
- Identify risks, hazards and emergencies in early years settings
- Recognise signs of illness in young children and how to administer medicine
- Understand key legislation and statutory guidance on equality, diversity and inclusive practise
- Learn how to respond to concerns of abuse and identify policies regarding the safeguarding of young children
- Explore the stages of child development from birth to age 7
- Discover how attachments develop and how important they are for holistic development
- Plan and describe care routines for young children
- Practise sterilisation and infection control in line with statutory requirements
- Plan play opportunities and educational programmes in line with early years development requirements
- Support the nutritional needs of young children and understand the importance of healthy balanced diets and active lifestyles
You will be assessed through a portfolio of evidence that you will build throughout your course. You’ll also take part in a work placement to build and prove your skills.
