GCSE Maths (for part-time students)

The course follows the Edexcel (Pearson) GCSE Mathematics syllabus for the new 9-1 specification at Foundation level and consists of exam skills preparation for 3 exams.

All students are required to undertake screening tests to assess their current level of numeracy. If basic arithmetic skills (addition, subtraction, division, multiplication) need support, a Functional Skills Maths course may be more suitable first, before progressing on to a GCSE Mathematics course.

Success depends on motivation and the willingness to continue the course when faced with new topics. Age and time away from previous study should not deter anyone from attempting to improve their skills in mathematics.

Before enrolling, students are required to attend an interview to ensure they fulfil the suitability requirements, which is normally a grade 3 (or legacy D grade) in GCSE Maths. Students with lower than a grade 3 should study and successfully complete the Level 1 Functional Skills Qualification in Maths before progressing onto this course.

The results achieved in the screening test will help to decide the most suitable point of entry for achieving your goal in mathematics.

This course is available free of charge to you if:

• You are a UK Resident 
• You have not achieved a grade 4 or above in GCSE Maths
• You meet the suitability requirements set out by the Course Lecturer at assessment

• Calculate roots, fractions and multiples
• Order positive and negative numbers, decimals and fractions
• Understand key concepts and vocabulary such as prime numbers and percentages
• Use standard units of measure such as mass, length, time and money
• Be able to accurately estimate answers using approximation
• Interpret and solve algebraic expressions
• Understand coordinates and work with graphs
• Interpret gradients and linear functions
• Accurately create and plot your own graphs 
• Understand ratios, proportions and scale diagrams
• Learn how to use ruler and compass constructions to create lines and bisect angles
• Know and understand the different properties of a variety of shapes
• Create scatter graphs, diagrams, pie charts and frequency tables

Throughout this course, you will continuously be assessed, demonstrating and evaluating your own skills. At the end of the course, you will be assessed through three exams which are externally marked, one non-calculator and two calculator papers. 

Upon successful completion of this course, students gain a key qualification needed for the UK job market. This course opens up many opportunities for employment and allows learners to progress into further education, helping you to meet the entry requirements for a variety of job roles or further qualifications.
