Level 1 Vocational Studies in Art & Design (Pre-16 Only)
You will have the opportunity to undertake a carousel of activities in art, design and media at the beginnning of the course before deciding on your preferred specialist pathway, either Art & Design or Media.
Course overview
The Level 1 vocational course in Art, Design and Media provides pre-16 students (15 years olds) who are interested in the creative sector with the opportunity to explore different avenues before specialising in one of the two subjects.
This practical course enables you to build and develop a range of creative skills with a multitude of mediums, from painting, drawing, textiles, mixed media and animation.
It provides a foundation to move onto the next level qualification or employment. You will also continue to strengthen your Functional Skills in English, Maths and ICT.
Your study programme will consist of:
- Your chosen technical qualification
- GCSE English and maths if you are yet to achieve a grade 4 or above
- Personal Development sessions which focus on developing work-ready skills (such as CV writing), independent life skills (such as money management) and personal, social and professional growth.
- Work experience or industry placement (course dependent)

This course is for 15 year old students who are moving into year 11 as of 31st August 2026. No formal qualifications are required. Suitability for this course will be assessed at interview. It is essential that applicants have a keen interest in the industry and a willingness to learn in a structured and supportive environment.

Your work will be continuously assessed throughout this qualification.
Your course will be taught in our newly refurbished building, The Tower, which provides a dedicated and secure floor for Pre-16 students.

You will be allocated a certain amount of free printing, after which a small fee will be incurred. You can purchase more printing credits on our online store, which can be found here.
Career Pathways
Students who have completed this course can progress onto the Level 2 award in Creative Media, Art and Design.
