Level 1 Vocational Studies Motor Vehicle (Pre-16 Only)
Kick-start your journey into the motor vehicle industry with our pre-16 programme at Brooklands Technical College. Get hands-on experience working with tools, engines and vehicle systems as you develop practical skills that employers value.
Course overview
This programme is designed to give you a real taste of the motor vehicle sector, where you will learn the foundational skills required to enter the automotive industry. This practical course enables you to work on light motor vehicles and will enable you to learn about key vehicle components, from steering systems, suspension, spark ignition, routine maintenance checks and much more.
You will also continue to strengthen your Functional Skills in English, Maths and ICT.
This programme is ideal for pre-16 learners who:
- Are interested in a career in vehicle maintenance or the motor industry
- Enjoy practical, hands-on learning
- Want to develop valuable skills for further education & employment
- Want to try something new
This course is for 15-year-old students (as of 31st August 2026) who are moving into Year 11. No formal qualifications are required but it is essential that applicants have a keen interest in motorsports or vehicle maintenance, with the willingness to learn in a structured and supportive environment. Suitability for this course will be assessed through an interview with our dedicated Pre-16 team.
What you'll learn
You’ll develop essential skills and knowledge, including:
- Learn about breaking systems, engine components and fuel systems
- Complete body repair processes, including general vehicle maintenance and wheel & tyre checks
- Build a light vehicle from the ground up
- Develop your customer service skills and learn about low carbon technologies
- Receive an introduction to new tools, equipment and materials required for maintaining motor vehicles
- Oversee the upkeep of mechanical tools and common workshop equipment
You will also learn about tools and equipment, health and safety regulations and study skills that will benefit you in further education and employment.
The Brooklands name has a long association with the engineering industry and we’re very proud to continue the tradition through our wide range of engineering courses in well-equipped workshops. Our excellent engineering facilities include several workshops, a motor vehicle area, a manufacturing area, computer facilities and study areas.
What you'll need
When working in our engineering workshops, you will be required to wear steel-capped boots and overalls. Students may also rent a locker on site, providing a deposit which will be returned to them at the end of their course.
Career Pathways
Once you have completed this course, students can progress onto the Level 2 Award in Safe Maintenance of Electric and Hybrid Vehicles.
