This programme is designed to give you a real taste of the construction industry.
This programme is ideal for pre-16 learners who:
- Are interested in a career in construction.
- Enjoy practical, hands-on learning.
- Want to develop valuable skills for further education & employment.
- Want to try something new
This course is for 15-year-old students (as of 31st August 2026) who are moving into Year 11. No formal qualifications are required but it is essential that applicants have a keen interest in construction, with the willingness to learn in a structured and supportive environment. Suitability for this course will be assessed through an interview with our dedicated Pre-16 team.
What you'll learn
You’ll develop essential skills and knowledge, including:
Bricklaying and Blockwork:
- Learn to cut bricks and blocks with precision.
- Develop the skills to create strong and accurate bed and perpendicular joints.
- Build small walls using bricks and blocks.
- Understand the principles of pointing and jointing, and apply different joint finishes.
Carpentry:
- Learn to use face and edge marks for accurate measurements.
- Develop sawing skills to cut along a line.
- Master the use of a plane to shape timber.
- Learn to use a chisel for precise woodworking.
You will also learn about tools and equipment, health and safety and study skills that will benefit you in further education and employment.
Our carpentry and construction workshop offers a dynamic, hands-on environment designed to spark creativity and build practical skills. Each area is equipped with its own specialised tools and dedicated workspaces, allowing learners to experience authentic, real-world craftsmanship. Whether you’re shaping timber or assembling brick structures, our workshop spaces provide the ideal space to learn, create and grow.
What you'll need
You will be required to purchase steel-capped boots, a measuring tape and a Brooklands branded high vis t-shirt. Students may also rent a locker on site, providing a deposit which will be returned to them at the end of their course.
Career Pathways
Once successful in completing this qualification, students can progress onto the Level 2 Award in Site Carpentry or the Level 2 Award in Brickwork at the college.
