Course overview

At Brooklands Technical College, we have a team of dedicated, experienced staff with vast industry experience. Over the duration of your course you will learn everything you need to know to have a successful start in industry. 

Not only will you learn about the exciting and varied world of aviation, but you’ll also gain the practical and technical skills required to take off into a rewarding and dynamic career. Whether you prefer to work on the ground or take flight, this certificate encompasses the many principles of working in the aviation sector. 

You also have the opportunity to experience the industry first hand, putting into practice what you have learned in the classroom during assessments on our fantastic day trips and overseas visits.

The minimum entry requirements for this course includes GCSE English or maths (grade 0-3), or a Level 1 Functional Skills. Those who do not achieve a grade 4 in English or maths will be required to study this alongside their course.


What you'll learn

This course provides a perfect introduction into the aviation industry. You will explore two different modules, Aviation Operations and Cabin Crew.

Aviation Operations:

  • Explore career pathways and opportunities within the aviation industry
  • Know the importance of following health and safety procedures when travelling
  • Learn how to recognise, prevent and minimise different types of airside hazards
  • Understand health and safety procedures for reporting safety breaches
  • Gain a better insight into airport rules and regulations
  • Identify restricted zones and know how the potential security risks can impact an aviation business
  • Explore key legislation and the responsibilities of  regulatory bodies in aviation
  • Learn the key stages of Accounting Authorising Air (AAA)
  • Understand the key communication methods and protocols used in aviation
  • Develop your communication skills and identify the required flight documents in the aviation sector

Cabin Crew:

  • Understand the roles and responsibilities of cabin crew, both pre and post flight, in ensuring the safety and security of passengers
  • Explore the chain of command of an aircraft and learn about the importance of ground staff
  • Learn about the IATA (International Air Transport Association) codes used by all national and international airports
  • Perform safety demonstrations and carry out cabin security checks
  • Learn how medical issues are dealt with on aircrafts and know how to respond to aircraft emergencies such as fires, decompression or turbulence
  • Understand key survival strategies after an airline emergency, if placed in arctic, desert or jungle conditions
  • Explore the needs of passengers with special requirements and how to provide effective customer service
  • Learn how to make passenger announcements onboard an aircraft
  • Practise selling to passengers on-board and learn how to establish their wants and needs

This qualification is assessed through a combination of course work, in class tests, role plays, presentations and work experience. 


What you'll need

Students are required to purchase and wear a set uniform, this includes a scarf and badge which can be purchased for £15. Students are responsible for providing their own shirts and skirts or trousers. Upon enrolment, you will be advised on how and where to purchase any uniform you may need.

Students are also allocated a certain amount of free printing,  after which a small fee will be incurred. You can purchase more printing credits on our online store, which can be found here.

There are also a variety of trips that are scheduled throughout the year, more information on the costs of these trips can be discussed at enrolment.


Career Pathways

Upon successful completion of both modules, learners can internally progress onto the Level 3 NCFE Introductory Diploma in Travel & Tourism here at the college.
