Level 3 Motor Vehicle Maintenance Technician Apprenticeship

This comprehensive apprenticeship provides hands-on training in automotive repair, diagnostic procedures and workshop safety. Apprentices will learn to maintain tools, follow safe working protocols and rectify complex faults across engine, mechanical, chassis and advanced electrical/electronic systems to meet industry and legal standards.

• Ages 16–18: Applicants must hold a minimum of Grade 4 in both English and Maths.
• Ages 19+: Adults are exempt from the English and Maths requirement, subject to employer approval.

You will need to demonstrate an interest in working in the motor vehicle sector. All applicants applying for an apprenticeship will be required to attend an interview and undertake initial assessments.

If you have achieved a Level 2 motor vehicle qualification, you will be assessed prior to starting an apprenticeship on your practical experience. If sufficient practical experience is demonstrated, then you may be enrolled on the Level 3 apprenticeship, however most in this position will undertake the Level 2 apprenticeship first.

• Understand the importance of PPE and good health and safety practices in an automotive environment
• Practise use of hand tools and learn how to maintain them in the workshop
• Prepare light vehicles by following safe working procedures
• Develop your ability to diagnose and repair engine faults
• Repair and replace damaged components to meet legal requirements
• Understand how to work safely when carrying out light vehicle chassis diagnostics and repairs
• Learn how to diagnose and repair mechanical engines, ignition and fuel systems, valve mechanisms and many other vehicle components
• Learn how to diagnose and rectify electrical system faults and gain a better insight into the principles of electronic communication systems in light vehicles

You will be continually assessed throughout your training by a nominated Assessor. Most of the assessment will take place in the workplace to complete a portfolio of evidence, you will also take external and internal examinations for your functional skills (if required). Your progress will be reviewed regularly and achievable targets set, to ensure you complete your apprenticeship on time.

In advance of starting this apprenticeship, students will need to purchase their  own personal protective equipment (PPE). This will consist of Steel or composite toe safety shoes and overalls. Guidance on this will be provided by your employer. 

At the college, you will be allocated a certain amount of free printing, after which a small fee will be incurred. You can purchase more printing credits on our online store, which can be found here.

Upon successful completion of your apprenticeship, you may be interested in continuing your education at university or you may wish to progress onto a level 4 qualification. Many apprentices will also continue their education and employment through their apprenticeship employer.
