Course overview
The Level 2 Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Principles is designed for 19+ learners who are interested in developing a career in the motor industry; you’ll gain the skills and experience required to work as a service technician on light vehicles, such as cars and light vans.
The course covers a range of topics, including: engine and vehicle systems, health and safety in the workplace, diagnostics and maintenance procedures.
Your study programme will consist of:
- Your chosen technical qualification
- GCSE English and maths if you are yet to achieve a grade 4 or above
- Personal Development sessions which focus on developing work-ready skills (such as CV writing), independent life skills (such as money management) and personal, social and professional growth.
- Work experience or industry placement (course dependent)

The minimum entry requirements for this course includes GCSE English and maths (grade 3-4) or Level 2 Functional Skills. Those who do not achieve a grade 4 in English or maths will be required to study this alongside their course.
What you'll learn

- Learn which tools and materials are required when constructing, fitting, modifying or repairing vehicles and their components
- Understand how to apply automotive engineering and fitting principles when working on a vehicle
- Know the importance of PPE and their place in the workshop
- Learn effective housekeeping skills and procedures to keep the workshops and environment safe
- Gain insight into the main roles and pathways within the automotive industry
- Learn how to carry out routine maintenance and servicing of light vehicles, supported by legal requirements and common maintenance procedures
- Carry out vehicle adjustments, replace vehicle components and compare vehicles accurately against vehicle specifications
- Evaluate the performance of replaced or adjusted components and learn how to report problems or issues that arise
- Learn how to remove and replace light vehicle engine systems, including lubrication and cooling units
- Reassemble a light vehicle engine to match legal requirements
- Grow in confidence as you learn how to record accurate information and provide suitable recommendations to customers
- Explore how key components in light vehicles operate, from ignition to exhaust systems
What you'll need
In advance of the course starting students will need to purchase their personal protective equipment (PPE). This will consist of Steel or composite toe safety shoes and overalls. Guidance on this will be provided during enrolment.
You will also be expected to have your own pencil case, with the relevant equipment for this course, this includes: pens, pencils, ruler, protractor, compass, eraser, lined paper and a ring binder.
You will be allocated a certain amount of free printing, after which a small fee will be incurred. You can purchase more printing credits on our online store, which can be found here.
Career Pathways
Once you complete the Level 2 Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance & Repair Principles, you can progress onto the level 3 Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance or the Level 2 Award in Safe maintenance of Electric and Hybrid Vehicles here at the college.
Learners may also be interested in applying for an apprenticeship at a local garage or can find entry level roles as a junior auto care technician or motor vehicle service technician.
