Course overview
The Level 2 Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Principles is designed for 19+ learners who are interested in developing a career in the motor industry; you’ll gain the skills and experience required to work as a service technician on light vehicles, such as cars and light vans.
The course covers a range of topics, including: engine and vehicle systems, health and safety in the workplace, diagnostics and maintenance procedures.
There are no entry requirements for this course but we recommend that students begin their studies with a good standard of English and maths. Before you enrol onto this course, you will be invited to an interview with the course lecturer to determine your suitability for this course.

What you'll learn

- Learn how to carry out routine maintenance and servicing of light vehicles, supported by legal requirements and common maintenance procedures
- Carry out vehicle adjustments, replace vehicle components and compare vehicles accurately against vehicle specifications
- Evaluate the performance of replaced or adjusted components and learn how to report problems or issues that arise
- Learn how to remove and replace light vehicle engine systems, including lubrication and cooling units
- Reassemble a light vehicle engine to match legal requirements
- Grow in confidence as you learn how to record accurate information and provide suitable recommendations to customers
- Explore how key components in light vehicles operate, from ignition to exhaust systems
What you'll need
In advance of the course starting students will need to purchase their personal protective equipment (PPE). This will consist of Steel or composite toe safety shoes and overalls. Guidance on this will be provided during enrolment.
You will also be expected to have your own pencil case, with the relevant equipment for this course, this includes: pens, pencils, ruler, protractor, compass, eraser, lined paper and a ring binder.
You will be allocated a certain amount of free printing, after which a small fee will be incurred. You can purchase more printing credits on our online store, which can be found here.
Career Pathways
Upon successful completion of this course, students can apply to an apprenticeship at a local garage or they can enter employment as a motor vehicle service technician or an autocare technician.
