Equity, Diversity & Inclusion

“It is not our differences that divide us. It is our inability to recognise, accept and celebrate those differences.”

Our EDI objectives for this academic year:

Our focus on Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) means we are working hard on three simple things:

1) Helping everyone achieve: We look closely at our student outcomes to make sure our most disadvantaged learners are achieving in line with their peers. We want to understand why there might be an achievement gap and ensure that support is available.

2) Listening to you: We will use student voice to ask you what inclusion means to you and to explore what is most important.

3) Celebrating everyone: We will use your ideas to create a calendar of fun events throughout the year that celebrate our diverse community and backgrounds.

National Year of Reading 2026

In support of National Year of Reading 2026, Brooklands Technical College launched a campaign to encourage learners to read more books. As part of this initiative, we encouraged students to write book reviews on their favourite books that celebrate diversity, such as books with disabled protagonists, ethnic minority authors, GRT (Gypsy, Roma and Traveller) characters or books that include LGBTQI+ themes and experiences.

The Diary of Anne Frank – Book Review

The Diary of Anne Frank – 5/5 Stars Reviewed by Carly Parker For the last week, I have spent my evenings reading a well-known classic The Diary Of A Young Girl by Anne Frank or as most know it, The Diary Of Anne Frank. Anne Frank wrote this diary when herself, her family and four…

A revolutionary read, five stars   The Greatest Story Ever Told: An Eye Witness Account by Bear Grylls Reviewed by Kate Veryard The Bible. How do you want to be known?
Learners at Brooklands Technical College are able to manage their title, preferred name, pronouns, gender identity and sexuality.

They will be able to select from a list of gendered and gender neutral titles, update their preferred name and pronouns.  This data will be held in the strictest of confidence; it will be used to compare retention and achievement with the wider college community to ensure nobody is held back by our practices.

We are always looking to give our students a well-rounded and fulfilling learning experience while preparing to head out on their career journeys. In order to support this, we have several students led groups that all enrolled Brooklands students are welcome to take part in.

LGBTQIA+ Group: There is a lunchtime group that meets every Wednesday lunchtime this academic year.

“Brooklands Technical College values diversity and strives to create a welcoming community in which all individuals are respected and included. The entire Brooklands community, staff and students alike, are called upon to play a role in our ensuring our commitment to diversity and inclusion is a reality. We support respectful and meaningful inquiry across differences, including; ability, age, appearance, ethnicity, family/marital status, gender, gender expression, immigration status, language, nationality, political ideology, race, religion, sexuality, socio-economic status, and other personal identities and experiences. The working environment is changing, becoming more interconnected and interdependent; it is paramount that our learners are equipped to thrive in this environment. The ability to include, communicate, cooperate, and collaborate with diverse individuals is important. We therefore engage in dialogue around issues of difference, identity, and ideology in the classroom and throughout campus. Through embracing diversity, our views are widened and our community strengthened.”
