Pre-16 success at Surrey conference

On Tuesday 10 March, students from our Pre-16 department took centre stage at a county-wide conference hosted by CBE (Centre for Britain and Europe), which focused on improving opportunities for young people at risk of becoming NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training). The “Next Steps for Young People: From Action to Lasting Change” conference was held at the University of Surrey and brought together educators, policymakers, charities and community leaders to explore how organisations can work together to create lasting change in supporting young people into education, employment and training. Many speakers shared personal stories as young people who had previously been NEET and how those experiences now shape the work they do to help others overcome similar challenges.

One of the most impactful parts of the conference was the Youth Voice” panel, where two of our Pre-16 Hair & Beauty students, Keira and Elise, held a presentation on their personal education journeys and discussed the challenges they had previously faced within the education system and the impact of those experiences, not only on themselves but also on their families.

Despite their struggles, they delivered thoughtful and insightful suggestions about how the education system could better support young people to stay engaged with learning. Their reflections offered valuable perspectives to the educators and policymakers in attendance, reinforcing the importance of listening directly to young people when shaping support services.

The students also spoke proudly about the positive impact Brooklands Technical College has had on their lives since joining the Pre-16 programme. They shared how the supportive environment, practical learning opportunities and encouragement from staff have helped them regain confidence and begin building aspirations for the future. Both students expressed their desire to eventually give back to the community by helping other young people facing similar challenges.

Meisha Harding, Director of Foundation and Progression Pathway at Brooklands Technical College, said: “This was a proud moment for the Pre-16 team, and we believe it perfectly highlights the transformative work being done here at the College.” Keira and Elise’s contributions served as a powerful reminder that when young people are given the opportunity to share their voices and experiences, they can play an essential role in shaping a more supportive and inclusive education system for the future.
