Students from Public Services Level 2 and Level 3 recently took part in an exciting and demanding Army Leadership Challenge at Longmoor Camp. The experience provided a valuable opportunity to apply their classroom learning in a real world military environment, while gaining insight into careers within the British Army.
Throughout the day, students were immersed in a series of practical team based exercises designed to reflect different roles within the Army. Each activity challenged their leadership, communication and problem solving skills, which are key components of their course.
One of the highlights was the Infantry camouflage exercise, where students learned how soldiers conceal themselves effectively in the field. This tested their attention to detail and understanding of environmental awareness. In the Engineers task, students worked together to recover a vehicle, requiring coordination, planning and physical effort. Meanwhile, the Army Air Corps activity involved preparing a vehicle for helicopter airlift, offering insight into the precision and teamwork needed for airborne operations.
In addition to these specialist tasks, students also took part in core team building exercises that reinforced trust and collaboration. A particularly memorable session was led by a jungle warfare instructor, who introduced students to tracking techniques, an activity that demanded patience, observation and critical thinking.
Tom Fuller, one of the participating students, reflected positively on the experience:
“I really enjoyed the Army Leadership challenge. Recently I have decided to join the Army instead of the Royal Navy. The day gave me greater insight into the Army and clarification that I am making the right career choice for me. I was very lucky, I would like to join The Rifles which are an Infantry unit and I got to meet serving members from that regiment.”
The visit strongly linked to the students’ course content, particularly units focused on leadership, teamwork, communication and career pathways in the public services sector. By experiencing these skills in action, students were able to deepen their understanding and build confidence in their own abilities.
Overall, the Army Leadership Challenge proved to be an inspiring and educational experience, giving students a clearer perspective on military careers while reinforcing the practical importance of the skills they are developing in their studies.
