  • About this course

    The aim of this programme is to offer students a route into further independence and employment.  In addition to this students are encouraged to develop confidence in personal and social skills, communication and teamwork.

    Students may wish to progress on to the Progression Pathway 3, the LEAP pathway, or into employment. Students will have the opportunity to plan progression with their personal tutor.

    Vocational areas may include Catering, Childcare, Horticulture, Hairdressing, Media, Retail, Sport or Motor Vehicle Studies.


    Where will I be studying?

    The Vickers Centre was opened in 2015 for learners with Autism and/or speech, language and communication needs. This centre provides a unique college based setting for students in Surrey. Learners will enjoy the security of a secure building ina quiet area of the college whilst having the opportunity to integrate into the wider college environment.

    • Domestic/catering kitchen
    • Craft/Art room
    • Socialising/eating area
    • Horticulture facilities
    • Outdoor trim trail
    • Quiet rooms & break out areas

    What modules are covered?

    Skills development includes:

    • Independent living
    • Household shopping
    • Using money
    • Making simple meals
    • Community awareness
    • Personal care and hygiene

    Who is the course suitable for?

    Foundation for Employment is suitable for those who have a learning difficulty or disability and who prefer to learn in a small group with dedicated support. They are likely to have an EHCP.

    Suitability for the course is to be determined at interview. Students who have not attended the college before should consider transition planning with the college, to include taster sessions and attendance at Summer School.

    How is the course assessed?

    • Entry Level 2 Certificate in Life and Living Skills
    • Functional English, Maths and ICT at the appropriate level
    • Employability skills - supported work and work placement opportunities
    • College certificate - to evidence progress made against individual targets

    Are there any extra costs?

    Additional expenses to consider include travel expenses, cafe visits and leisure outings which may require money on a regular basis.

    Students are expected to bring folders, pens and writing paper to all lessons. Uniform/equipment and a contribution towards the expense of travelling within the community is necessary for some lessons

    No formal qualifications are needed but enthusiam and an interest in your chosen subject area(s) is essential.
