About this course

This is a one year course that will include both practical and theory work. Study will include facials, manicure, pedicure, waxing, lash and brow treatments, make-up and related anatomy and physiology.  During the course you will also be enrolled onto the tutorial, enrichment programme and either 1 functional skill that will prepare you for work within the beauty industry or an option to re-take 1 GCSE.  Students will be expected to wear uniform and present themselves in a professional manner as practical work will be assessed in the commercial beauty salon.

Where will I be studying?

If you enjoy making people look and feel good then this is the career for you.  Beauty therapists start their career working in a beauty salon or spa.  They can also go on to specialise in a specific area such as massage, skin care or make-up for TV and film.

Brooklands College has specialist facilities for hair and beauty courses, linked to the on-site Inspire Hair & Beauty Academy on both campuses.  There will be a work based element which will prepare you for employment in the industry.  You will also have the opportunity to take part in competitions and all students are expected to wear uniforms and present themselves in a professional manner.

Who is the course suitable for?

The course is for 16-19 year olds who wish to enter the professional world of the beauty industry.

How is the course assessed?

Continuous assessment via: practical client sessions, homework and course assignments, professional discussions, written evaluations and mandatory written test papers.

Are there any extra costs?

A uniform and beauty kit will need to be purchased (information will be given to you at interview).  Visits may include: professional exhibitions and a chance to take part in competitions and suppliers product courses.  Students are allocated a certain amount of free printing, after which a small fee will be incurred.

Entry Requirements

What qualifications will I need?

5 GCSE passes including 1 GCSE at grade C/grade 4 and above or for progressing student’s successful achievement of a level 1 vocational qualification.

Next Steps

Further studies in Level 3 Beauty Therapy or Complementary Therapies such as ITEC Level 3 Massage.  Alternatively, you can gain employment working in a beauty salon at Level 2, this may include hotels and gyms, or you may also work as a make-up counter assistant.

Approximate starting salary for a Beauty Therapist = £12,000.
