The WorldSkills UK Cyber Hackathon is an exciting benchmarking event for colleges across the UK where students can demonstrate their cyber security skills in a Capture the Flag (CTF) activity. A total of 136 teams took part in the experience, competing in teams of two for six hours. Throughout the competition, learners faced a range of increasingly difficult challenges, with the goal of capturing the most flags and securing the top position on the leaderboard.
As the competition began, which started off slowly due to technical issues at registration, which was nerve wracking for all, Team MJ made an impressive push to 5th place, closely followed by Team AJ in 6th place.
Team MJ then showcased extraordinary skill and speed, soaring to 1st place. The competition intensified, with Team MJ briefly falling to 3rd place before fighting tirelessly for two hours to reclaim the top position. The back-and-forth battle continued as they dropped to 8th place, only to make a strategic push, earning 30 crucial points and ultimately reclaiming 1st place! It was a fast-paced, thrilling experience that kept everyone on the edge of their seats.
In the end, Brooklands Technical College held onto the top spot and took joint third place. Just like last year, Marley Gladman-Grace led the charge, pushing the team all the way to the finish line. His name, and the team’s name, now proudly sit at the top of the leaderboard. The student’s perseverance and dedication showcased at the event was a testament to our college values and we are incredibly proud of their efforts.
The event provided valuable industry experience, enhancing our student’s readiness for employment and higher-level competitions. To recognise their participation and skills, our students received a digital credential, providing them with formal acknowledgement of their achievements.
