Media students use filmmaking skills to support homeless community

This week, our level 3 media students have travelled to Weybridge highstreet to direct and record a powerful promotional video for their chosen local charity – Rentstart. 

Rentstart is a local charity based in Walton that helps people in Elmbridge who are homeless or vulnerably housed. They work with landlords to support those who are facing homelessness access the private rented sector. Their work includes financial support with housing deposits and helping people find affordable rent. Every year Rentstart house and support over 100 people. 

The project not only challenged students to apply their technical and creative abilities, but also gave them the opportunity to contribute to a meaningful cause that has a real impact in the community, as the students explained: ‘We’re doing this short video today and then in about a month or so, were doing a proper 3 minute documentary type video that will show more about the actual charity itself, maybe even a video with an actual person who is or has been homeless and sharing their experience. We can hopefully raise awareness and some money for the charity’.

For many students, the highlight of the project was knowing their work would make a difference. Rentstart will use the finished film to raise awareness, attract volunteers and support fundraising efforts.  By combining creativity with community purpose, this project showcased what young filmmakers can achieve when given the opportunity to use their talents for good. Our students have not only grown as content creators, they have contributed something meaningful to a charity that changes lives.
