This course is inspired by the growing need for qualified Personal and Fitness Trainers, in partnership with PureGym.
The Gym & Fitness Centres industry was worth £1.7 billion in 2022 and since COVID has grown by 25.2%. The growth in this industry is largely driven by the low-cost gym sector, so we were delighted to strike a partnership with PureGym West Byfleet. Brooklands sport & fitness students will have multiple experiences through the year with PureGym West Byfleet to enhance their knowledge and skills while also offering opportunities for students work experience and employment.
The Extended Diploma in Sport, Fitness & Personal Training is an exciting two-year course which explores the interests of sport, coaching, exercise, and health & fitness. The course is endorsed by CIMSPA (Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport & Physical Activity) which means on successful completion of Year 1, students will be accredited with a Level 2 Gym Instructor qualification, and on successful completion of Year 2 students will be accredited with a Personal Training qualification. As well as direct access to employment, the course provides excellent preparation for a sport, exercise, or health & fitness related degree course.
"I used to compete in gymnastics for Silvermere Gymnastics club, with the high bar being my favourite. Now I just train and coach others on all the different forms of apparatus"
“Originally, I wanted to go to university to study Nutrition, but I have decided to join the police at the end of this year”
“I’ve always wanted to come to college. I wanted to do a practical course as I didn’t like sitting in classes all the time. My parents came to Brooklands, my dad did catering, and my mum did Childcare”
“I enjoy the freedoms at the college”
We have a purpose built Gym where students on the Sports courses can develop their skills.
We also have a partnership with PureGym West Byfleet. Brooklands sport & fitness students will have multiple experiences through the year with PureGym West Byfleet to enhance their knowledge and skills while also offering opportunities for students work experience and employment.
The modules on the course provide a good foundation for a range of progression routes within Sport & Fitness, and include:
Careers in the Sport & Active Leisure Industry
Health, Wellbeing & Sport
Fitness Skills Development
Personal Trainer Skills Development
Research Project in Sport
Self-employment in Sport & Physical Activity

This course is suitable for those who want a practical, hands-on and educational course. Completion of the 2-year course results in students being qualified to work as Personal Trainers, as well as providing a solid platform for applying to unversity or the first steps into employment in the world of health and fitness.
There are a wide range of assessment methods to match the knowledge, skills and competencies required of students entering the Sport & Fitness industry or Higher education, which include coursework and assignments that are set and marked by both internal and external moderators.
There is an initial contribution to be paid at the start of the course for materials and equipment. You would also be expected to make a contribution to take part in any opportunities that arose throughout the course such as trips and additional qualifications, (e.g. coaching badges). More details on costs will be provided during the application stages.
Students are allocated a certain amount of free printing, after which a small fee will be incurred.
5 GCSE passes at grade 4 or above (including English and maths) or a Level 2 Certificate in Sport at Merit. If you do not have a grade 4 in English and maths, you will be required to study for this alongside your course.
