Engineering Students Return

The Engineering Department were delighted to welcome back former students this week, who came along to speak to our current Engineering students about the challenges and highlights of working for a race team.

Current student and Assistant Team Manager at West Surrey Racing, Carl Mitchell, joined former students Danielle Farnfield and Owen Weaver, to talk to students on our Level 3 Engineering course and Foundation degree.

They gave a valuable insight into both their roles and responsibilities and the tough conditions they face. Despite admitting it is extremely hard work with very long hours – some in bitterly cold and wet conditions – they emphasised that by being determined and putting in the hard work, you can succeed.

Being able to travel around the world, the lifestyle and the feeling of your team winning are all perks of the job. In terms of the winning aspect, they commented: “there’s nothing quite like it!”

Giving advice to students on how to stand out from the crowd when applying for jobs and the qualities needed when applying for work experience, they highlighted how vital it is to work hard and invest your time in something which you are passionate about.

With our outstanding reputation for Motorsport Engineering, they explained that many of the current workforce have come through the Brooklands Engineering route and offered the opportunity of work experience to the group.

Thank you to Carl, Danielle and Owen for inspiring our students and inviting them to sample life in the fast lane.
