Lessons In Teaching

Our lecturers always strive to develop their teaching methods, adapt to the changing times and produce innovative ideas for positive improvement to education. We value our staff for their incredible passion and dedication to the college and their students. It is wonderful to see our staff recognised for their achievements, here are a few spotlight new stories across this first term. 

Julia Chaplin – NCFE Aspiration Awards
Our Child Studies & Education lecturer Julia Chaplin proudly received a record-breaking number of nominations for the NCFE Aspiration Awards 2020 – Teacher / Tutor of the Year category. She is a real inspiration, helping to shape young minds with innovative learning techniques. 

Julia was nominated by many of her students for the incredible support she has shown them. “Julia has shown us that with help from a great tutor and team, anything is possible,” learner Zoe mentions.

OTLA Project
Breaking down the barriers… Our staff & students conducted an OTLA English research project looking into improving learner achievements during assessments.

The project initially recruited a team of lecturers and student researchers to develop approaches, which were tested with the GCSE student cohort, before being implemented. Trial exam papers were then compiled, using adapted more student-centric questions, to attempt to overcome potential barriers to achievement. The project reported that the collaborative approach they had taken with students had helped them self-assess their own learning, and given them greater confidence with reading.

Amanda Wayling – FE Week Feature 
Our Media lecturer, Amanda Wayling discusses the blended learning format on the FE Week Opinion page. She explains how remote lessons during lockdown actually suited some students better. 

“What we need to remember in this new academic year is that remote teaching can be a positive experience. It can enhance learning and allow students to demonstrate their technological competence.”
