Creating flexible learning spaces at Brooklands Technical College

As part of the redevelopment of its Weybridge campus, Brooklands Technical College has completed a complete refurbishment of The Tower, a key building now dedicated to teaching across all disciplines. Designed to support a broad range of learning activities, including theory lessons, workshops, tutorial sessions and English and Maths, the redesigned space also includes a dedicated floor for Pre-16 Foundation Pathway students who have chosen an alternative route through secondary education.

The brief

To support this new layout, architect 3BM specified moveable walls that would enable classrooms to be divided or opened up as needed, without compromising on acoustic quality. GTCI, the appointed main contractor, approached Häfele UK to find a solution that met the brief and budget.

The solution

After reviewing the specification and budget, Häfele recommended its Slido W-Park11 110 system, which offers acoustic performance, flexibility and cost-effectiveness. Five sets of moveable walls were incorporated into the design, with Häfele supporting the project from early engagement through to completion, including a full site survey, schedule planning and installation.

The result

The finished result is a multi-functional teaching space that provides the college with the flexibility to adapt classrooms to different group sizes and lesson formats throughout the day. The moveable wall systems enable the same footprint to work harder, helping the college make more efficient use of space while creating a high-quality learning environment.

The Brooklands Technical College project also showcases Häfele’s comprehensive service approach, supporting contractors in creating innovative solutions within budget and helping education clients create spaces that meet the needs of learners now and into the future.

Speaking about the project, Lorne Richardson, Assistant Principal, Brooklands Technical College, said:  “We are delighted with the new moveable walls. They have provided us with the flexibility we need to adapt our learning spaces to suit different class sizes and teaching styles.  This investment is part of the wider College redevelopment and shows our commitment to providing dynamic learning environments, that serve the local community and help students to gain technical knowledge and skills for the workplace.”
