The Steps to Becoming an Apprentice

The Steps to Becoming an Apprentice?

  1. The criteria is they are aged 16 years or over, live in England and will not be in full-time education when they start their apprenticeship.
  2. You can apply for an apprenticeship while you are still at school. Entry requirements are flexible however some apprenticeships require specific GCSEs.
  3. Visit local college Open Days. They will often run apprenticeship programmes. Colleges can support you to find an apprenticeship as they work with local employers, looking to take on apprentices.
  4. Register on the Government’s National Apprenticeships Service website, create an account and sign in and search for apprenticeships in your area. Brooklands College Apprenticeship Team can help you and have a list of current vacancies.
  5. Apply through the apprenticeship website and your application is sent to the employer. The next step could be an interview at the employer’s business; hopefully you will be offered the apprenticeship. A start date will be set and the College will inform them if they need to attend College for training.
  6. Start your apprenticeship, you will be employed for a minimum of 30 hours per week.
  7. You are regularly supported by an Assessor from the College and a Mentor in the workplace. (Apprenticeships require assessments and some require exams, depending on the apprenticeship taken).
  8. An apprenticeship can last from one to three years. Once completed you can go to the next apprenticeship level, continue to work with your employer, search for a new role with your new qualifications or continue a course of further study.
