About this course
You will learn new site carpentry skills as well as develop those learnt at level 1. You will gain the underpinning knowledge and skills to prepare for a career in the industry. The college has close links to construction companies and has a work placement programme where students can get the opportunity to experience commercial construction work conditions.
Trips to a building exhibition and building sites are planned as part of your studies. You will also take a health and safety test.

What modules are covered?
At level 2 you will study and be assessed in the subjects below:
• Health, safety and welfare in construction and associated industries
• Prepare and use carpentry and joinery portable power tools
• Understanding information, quantities and communication with others
• Understanding construction technology
• Carry out first fixing operations
• Carry out second fixing operations
• Carry out structural carcassing operations
• Carry out maintenance to non-structural carpentry work
Who is the course suitable for?
The course is for 16-19 year olds who have completed the Level 1 Diploma in Carpentry and Joinery or an equivalent qualification, or a keen interest in carpentry and joinery with evidence of studying at GCSE level.
How is the course assessed?
You will be assessed through in-course assessments, end of unit tests and practical tests.
Are there any extra costs?
Conditions at this training centre reflect those on site. All students must have their own protective overalls, toe-protective footwear, a recommended basic tool kit, a text book and basic stationery. Students are allocated a certain amount of free printing, after which a small fee will be incurred.
Entry Requirements
What qualifications will I need?
The minimum entry requirements for this course includes GCSE English and maths (grade 3-4) or Level 2 Functional Skills. Those who do not achieve a grade 4 in English or maths will be required to study this alongside their course.
Progression
Direct entry to full-time employment or a construction apprenticeship are possible career paths.
