Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools

About this course

This course provides an ideal first qualification for those who are working or want to work as a teaching assistant in a school. You will attend college for one morning each week for a taught session led by one of the tutor team, as well as gaining practical, work-based experience.

There are no examinations. Instead you will gradually develop a portfolio of different types of evidence of your knowledge and skills, including short written tasks, observations in the school and professional discussions.

What will the course involve?

The course is comprised of a number of short units of learning on topics such as:

• Child and young people’s development
• Supporting learning activities
• Supporting children and young people’s behaviour
• Equality, diversity and inclusion in working with children and young people.

What qualifications will I need?

You should be working or volunteering in a school for a minimum of 6 hours per week while you are on the course. It is also important that the school is supportive of your studies and if possible you should have a mentor in your workplace.

Successful completion of the Level 2 Certificate allows for progression to the Level 3 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools.
