About this course

With an emphasis on practical study in our outstanding manufacturing workshops, this course will provide you with the knowledge and skills to be able to carry out basic manufacturing processes including, fabrication, sheet metal work, lathe operation and welding. You will also learn some generic engineering skills that can apply to many different types of engineering, including, interpreting engineering drawings and engineering marking out.

As part of your programme of study you will also attend tutorial and take part in work experience. All learners who do not have a GCSE Grade C/4 or above in English and Mathematics will continue to study these subjects.

The Brooklands name has a long association with the engineering industry and we’re very proud to continue the tradition through our wide range of engineering courses in well-equipped workshops.

Our excellent engineering facilities comprise several workshops including Aeroplane hanger (including a helicopter rig!) computer facilities and study areas.

Additional Qualifications:

Whilst you are studying the Level 1 Certificate in Engineering you will also study:

  • Level 1 Award in Metal Inert Gas (MIG) Welding
  • Entry 3 or Level 1 Functional Skills in Maths, English and IT.

If you are interested in taking your first step towards becoming a manufacturing engineer then this is the right course for you.

How is the course assessed?

Level 1 City and Guilds Certificate in Engineering:

  • Working in engineering – Online Multiple Choice Exam
  • Carrying out Basic Turning Techniques – Assignments to assess practical and knowledge tasks
  • Working with Sheet metals - Assignments to assess practical and knowledge tasks

Level 1 City and Guilds Award in Metal Inert Gas (MIG) Welding:

  • 5 practical assignments and 1 oral knowledge test

Are there any extra costs?

  • In advance of the course starting students will need to purchase their own Health and Safety equipment (Personal, Protective, Equipment). This will consist of Steel or composite toe safety shoes and overalls.  Guidance on this will be provided during the application stage.
  • Pens, pencils, ruler, protractor, compass, eraser, line paper and a ring binder

Students are allocated a certain amount of free printing, after which a small fee will be incurred.

Entry Requirements

What qualifications will I need?

GCSEs grade 3 – 1 (or entry Level 3 literacy and numeracy).

For pre 16s no entry requirements but it is essential that applicants have a keen interest in the industry and willingness to learn.

Next Steps

Dependent upon GCSE Maths and English Grades this course can provide direct progression onto the Level 2 City and Guilds Diploma in Engineering – Manufacturing Technology course. Alternatively full time employment in the engineering manufacturing industry or a Level 2 Apprenticeship in Engineering Manufacturing.
