Accessibility Statement

This accessibility statement applies to https://www.brooklands.ac.uk.

This website is run by Brooklands College. It is intended users include but are not limited to: all prospective learners, parents/guardians and/or employers, as well as stakeholders and the general public.

We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. For example, that means you should be able to:

  • change colours, contrast levels and fonts
  • zoom in up to 300% without the text spilling off the screen
  • navigate most of the website using just a keyboard
  • navigate most of the website using speech recognition software
  • listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver)

We’ve also made the website text as simple as possible to understand. We have implemented ReciteMe, which provides many assistive technologies – this can be accessed by clicking ‘Accessibility and Translation’ at the top of each web page.

ReciteMe allows you to:

  • have our website text and documents read aloud
  • change the background colour of the website and the colour of the text
  • change font sizes
  • change font
  • zoom in on any part of a web page
  • translate our website into over 100 languages
  • look up any word in the dictionary

How accessible this website is

The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) defines requirements for designers and developers to improve accessibility for people with disabilities. It defines three levels of conformance: Level A, Level AA, and Level AAA.

As of the publication of this statement, our website is partially conformant with WCAG 2.1 level AA. Partially conformant means that some parts of the content do not fully conform to the accessibility standard.

We know some parts of this website are not fully accessible:

  • most older PDF documents are not fully accessible to screen reader software. Also in older PDFs the headers are not correctly marked up on the tables. We are committed to an ongoing process of updating these documents.
  • live video streams do not have captions

Compliance status

This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.1 AA standard, due to the non-compliances listed below.

Non-accessible content

The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons.

Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations

  • most older PDF documents are not fully accessible to screen reader software. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.1.1 (non-text content). We are committed to an ongoing process of updating these documents and plan to update these by September 2023. Please contact us if you encounter an issue.
  • Some older PDF documents have headers that are not correctly marked up on the tables. This fails WCAG 1.3.1 Info and Relationships: In tables (PDF). We are committed to an ongoing process of updating these documents and plan to update these by September 2023. Please contact us if you encounter an issue.
  • live video streams do not have captions. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.2.4 (captions – live). We are committed to an ongoing process of updating these videos. Please contact us if you encounter an issue.
  • some images do not have a text alternative, so people using a screen reader cannot access the information. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.1.1 (non-text content). We plan to add text alternatives for all images by September 2023. When we publish new content we’ll make sure our use of images meets accessibility standards.

Content that’s not within the scope of the accessibility regulations

Live video

We do not plan to add captions to live video streams because live video is exempt from meeting the accessibility regulations.

What we’re doing to improve accessibility

We are currently working through the website’s images and embedded flipbooks in order to improve their accessibility for users.
