Introducing the Brooklands College upcycling club! Our SEND & Transition department have established this fantastic creative project for students to participate in. The club is initially being offered to the SEND & Transition bubbles with the potential to roll out across the college to all students.
There has already been good progress from the students involved and headed up by Kate Evans (LSA), the students are working on developing the brand identity which includes the brand name, designing a logo and creating posters to advertise the project. Items which are in need of some TLC have already been donated to the club and, so far, students have beautifully upcycled some benches which will be used in the local community.
“We believe that this type of club will be so beneficial to learners, as they will gain new experience and skills such as teamwork, problem-solving, communication, health and safety, as well as the hands-on work they will be involved in. Our learners have shown great interest and eagerness to be a part of this project.
The idea of the benches is to give the students more outside seating for our department, as currently this is quite limited. As well as this, we also have community projects that we have just started, one of which is upcycling a bench for an elderly lady and then returning it to her, so that she can enjoy the sun safely in her garden. We also have a mud kitchen that can then be given to a nursery.
We hope that in the near future we could start selling the items and with any money raised, going back into our department. The learners will be involved in something completely new and we hope that the learners gain confidence and self-esteem and the satisfaction of knowing that they turned something old into something new!”
