As part of their land-based activities unit, Uniformed Public Services students headed over to Woking Archery Club in the recent term. Throughout their course students are expected to practice key characteristics such as leadership, discipline, strategic planning, coordination, teamwork and a plethora of other skills which are required in this line of work.

It’s that time of the year where our Business students participate in The Big Idea Challenge, an enterprise initiative by London Metropolitan University. Over the course of a few months, students across the UK get involved and compete in multiple stages across the competition with the aim to progress and build on their ideas.

Commencing  on 19th January and ending on 30th April, the challenge was for our students and staff to walk 101 miles each over 101 days and raise money for the NHS. The project also aimed to improve morale amongst College members and to help everyone keep fit and healthy during the national lockdown.

Across the recent weeks, students and staff have been working hard to revitalise our onsite allotment to be able to put it to good use. Students got stuck in by weeding, cutting the grass, painting beds as well as generally cleaning and tidying the area.

Since 19th January, our students and staff have been walking every day with a number of intentions including: feeling united as a college whilst remote working; staying physically fit & mentally healthy during lockdown; and raising money for the NHS. We are now on the home stretch with our end date of 30th April in sight.

A mere 25+ years ago, Julie was unsure of what she wanted to do. She stumbled upon the brand new Travel & Tourism course (formerly known as Leisure Studies). This was the first year that Brooklands College ran the course and it progressed onwards from there. Julie enjoyed the practical nature of the course and, in particular, liked the ‘People In Organisations’ and ‘Arts & Entertainments’ modules. “We organised a conference and events, that was quite good. We also had a trip to Barcelona,” Julie explains.

Following the government announcement on Monday 22nd February, just like every other UK education provider, we began preparations to ensure students have a safe return to site. Lecturers started working on the transition for those returning to continue their practical training and, simultaneously, we all got ready for COVID testing.

As part of their qualification, this week our SEND & Transition students have been tasked to plan and organise a few fundraising activities for Red Nose Day, Comic Relief. It is a great opportunity for the students to make a positive contribution to the community and raise a smile or two.

Over one thousand 16-18-year olds will take part in the virtual work experience programme funded by the Department for Education (DFE), starting on 22 February 2021.
